Notes for HERCULES TYRWHITT:

Lineage.

This family, styled by Camden in his Brittania "the honorable and ancient house of Tyrwhitts, knts.," has been seated for several centuries in the north of England. The first person of the name of whom we ??ave any certain account is a SIR HERCULUS, who is said (on the authority of the Vincent and Harleian MSS.) to have been knighted and settled in Northumberland 2nd WILLIAM I. Himself, or his son, bearing the same name, married a daughter of Sir Thomas Scargill, knt. and was living A.D. 1109, 10th HENRY I. This Sir Hercules is stated to have thus acquired the surname of TYRWHITT. Severely wounded in defending a bridge, single handed, against numerous assailants, at the moment he had succeeded in forcing them to retire, he fell exhausted amongst the flags and rushes of an adjoining swamp, while the attention of his party, who in the interim had rallied, was fortunately directed to the spot where he lay by a flock of lapwings (or as called in some counties tyrwhits) screaming and hovering above, as is customary with those birds when disturbed in the vicinity of their nests. Camden, however, in his Remains derives the name from the place so called.

ARMS:..Gules (red), three lapwings Or (gold).

CREST:..A savage man Proper (natural color), cinctured and wreathed Vert (green), holding in both hands a club.

MOTTO:..Me stante virebunt...(While I stand they will flourish); Tyme tryeth truth.

Notes for ROBERT TYRWHITT:

SIR ROBERT TYRWHITT, knt. of Ketilby, who was one of the judges of the court of King's Bench, in the reigns of HENRY IV., V., and VI.; his patents, four in number, are dated 8th HENRY IV., 1st HENRY V., 1st HENRY VI., and may be found in Calendarium Patentium, Turri Londinensi. He is named among the "Tireurs des Peticions" to parliament either for England or Gascony and Aquitaine, for every parliament between 9th Henry IV. and 7th Henry VI. That the boldness of the feudal chief, however, strongly predominated in the character of this learned functionary over the meekness of the Christian judge, appears too evident by the following curious extract from Cotton's Records. "13 HENRY IV., William Lord Rosse, of Famlake, complayneth against Robert Tirwhitt, one of the justices of the King's Bench, for withholding from him the manor of Molton Rosse, in Lincolnshire, and laying wait for the sayd Lord Rosse with the number of 500 men. Sir Robert Tirwhitt before the kynge confesseth his fault and craveth pardon, and offeringe to stand to by order of two lords of the kindred of the sayd Lord Rosse as they should choose, whereunto the kynge agreed, and the sayd Lord Rosse chose the Archhishop of Canterbury and the Lord Grey, chamberlaine to the kynge, who made alonge award leaving the right of common of pasture in Wragby in com. Linc. to the determination of Sir William Gascoigne, chiefjustice, and it was enjoigned to the said Sir Robert Tirwhitt that at a day certaine he shod repair at Molton Rosse 2 tunnes of Gascoigne wyne, 2 fatt oxen, and 12 fatt sheepes, and offer reparation. And that he should bring together all knights, esquires, and yeomen, that were of his own, and that they shod all confess their fault and crave pardon, and further offer to the sayd Lord Rosse 500 markes in money, and that the sayde Lorde Rosse should refuse the money, graunt him pardon, and take his dinner only." The whole of the proceedings in this matter, from their commencement by the petition of William Lord Roos to the award of the arbitrators above mentioned, are recorded at great length in the rolls of parliament 13 Henry IV. The details are very curious and throw much light on the manners of that day. The award is an object of particular interest to the philological antiquarian, as being almost the earliest specimen, on record, of English as a written language.

This feud between the families of Rosse (or Roos) and Tyrwhitt continued up to the time of JAMES I. who on the occasion of several lives being lost on both sides in a casual rencontre during a hunting party, caused a gallows to be erected at Molton Rosse, near Belvoir, declaring that he would hang the first like offender on it. This gallows is said to be renewed from time to time, up to the present day, whenever it falls into decay.

 Sir Robert had issue,

WILLIAM (Sir), his heir.

John, of Harpswell, who m. the daughter and heiress of Sir -- Rolleston, knt. and had four daughters, of

whom Elizabeth, espoused John Whichcote, of Whichcote, in Shropshire.

Katherine, m. to Sir John Griffith, knt.

Maud, m. to Sir William de Montresor.

II. Robert, who was for two and thirty years in the service of CHARLES I. He was eldest Esquire of the Horse, Master of the Buckhounds, and with Sir C. Clerk, Ranger of the Newforest.

He followed the fortunes of that ill-fated monarch to the last, and when the momentary ascendancy of the Regicides had sullied their country with the blood of his master, he did not long survive. The broken

In 1631, having the king's commission for that purpose, he raised 1500 men for the service of Gustavus Adolphus, and in 1632, when upon the retirement of the marquis of Hamilton from the command of Gustavus' English and Scottish forces, his successor, the duke of Saxe Weimar, had reformed the 6000 British into two regiments, Lieutenant Colonel Francis Tyrwhitt, was by Gustavus'

desire appointed to the command of the first. In November, of the same year, a few days before the battle of Lutzen, he was taken prisoner by the imperialists whilst on a reconnoitering party with Gustavus, and was thus debarred from sharing the honours of that fatal day. He escaped after the action. In 1642 he joined King Charles, at York, with 155 men, and in the same year was

appointed to a principal command in the wars in Ireland, where he died in 1643, and was buried in Christ

Church, Cork.

Sir Robert Tyrwhitt, Kt.

Her Majesty's Master of The Hunt

Master Robert Tyrwhitt was named after his grandfather, who was a Privy Councilor before and into Elizabeth's reign. He is heir to the untitled lands of Kettleby in Lincolnshire. He served Her Majesty in his early youth as a page. He eventually married Lady Bridgett Manners without the Queen’s permission, through a mutually desirable arrangement by her parents. That, as they say, is history. What follows is his "current history", as it is known in the shire of Bristol and abroad.

Sir Robert, currently Her Majesty’s Master of the Hunt, was knighted on Progress three seasons ago for service in Kid’s Kingdom. He is no stranger to the ways of court and has enjoyed many a Progress. He is friendly with many of the old families through his positions and duties. His current occupation has acquainted him with many of the local population as well. His humbler roots and dislike for court politics often find him more comfortable away from court, practicing archery in the military camp, inspecting the mews and kennels, visiting the fletchers, bowyers and foresters, or teaching the local children about hunting and courtly behavior. His loyalty to Her Majesty keeps him from straying too far from Her, though.

Sir Robert is practical and tries to surround himself with the same. Art to him is found in nature and useful things. He appreciates well-made clothing and weapons, especially if they are suitable for the hunt. He likes good English longbows in particular and considers gunpowder to be "a passing fancy." He dislikes anyone who is all show and no substance and thinks there are too many overdressed new men in court who "wear their lands upon their backs." He accepts and is proud of his own station in life, without wishing undo advancement. He carries his bow like a gleaming badge of office. While doing his best to maintain a courtly attitude, his country accent may betray humbler roots. Not too humble, though, since his ancestors came over with William the Conqueror and also fought at Agincourt. He respects tradition as the way things should be and is wary of change. His daily routine is important in the same way. Above all, he values duty and honor and tolerates nothing less around the Queen.

Like most Tyrwhitts, Sir Robert is recusant. He believes religion should be personal, not fashionable. He keeps his religion to himself, but is better disposed toward Catholics than Protestants. He finds precisionists to be both amusing and tiresome, although he respects their right to their own interpretation (even if they do not accept his).

Ever watchful, he is intrigued by the new Spanish Ambassador. Sir Robert believes the Queen will never marry a foreign prince and is curious to see how this foreign nobleman will set about his task of Sisyphus. It is obvious that the Spanish are not well liked at court. Sir Robert likens it all to a bear baited amidst a pack court dogs. With gallant effort and talent the Spanish bear may make a good showing, but will still lose. He may swat a few courtly noses in the process, and there are a few that could use a good swat.

Notes for LIEUTENANT COLONEL RICHARD TYRWHITT:

(from: Canadian Orange Historical Site; http;//members.tripod.com/~Roughian/index.html)

Richard Tyrwhitt was born in Simcoe County, Ontario and on August 17, 1866 received a commission as a captain on No. 8 Company, Simcoe Forresters.  He saw service in the Fenian Raids and later duing the North West Rebellion.  He served as a Major with the York and Simcoe Battalions.  Tyrwhitt was first elected to the Federal Parliament as a Conservative M.P. in 1882 and throughout a long public career he was a strong supporter of the militia.

Tyrwhitt had began his military career as Captain of #8 Company of the Simcoe Foresters and assumed command of the 36th in 1886, the same year that he was in charge of the Canadian rifle team competing at Wimbledon, England.  He remained as commanding officer of the 36th until 1899 and is remembered as one of the Orange "Nobel Thirteen".

This cross-roads Pioneer Hamlet half a mile east of here, was settled about 1840. It was the site of Collins' Toll Gate when the old plank road was built in 1851. By 1866 there was a stage coach stop,Thomas Armstrong's Bay Horse Inn, C. Heasting's Crown Inn, a blacksmith, grocer, mason, carpenter, dressmaker, shoemaker and a school. Lieut.-Col. Richard Tyrwhitt, M.P. from 1882 to 1896, a commander in the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, was a distinguished resident. The Village declined as transportation improved.

Notes for EMMA WHITTAKER:

The 1901 census shows Emma as the head of the household living in York North, Gwillimbury West, sub-district f-2.

She has with her, her children George, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Arundel?, and Maynard.  Also her Aunt Maria Tyrwhiit, b. 1824, and 77 years of age; a cousin Kenneth Mackay, and a boarder/domestic Hattie Bell, b. in 1875.  We can assume since Septimus Tyrwhitt died just prior to the 1901 census, that his wife Maria moved in with her family-by-marriage.
